Редкая английская фамилия, на которую я нечаянно наткнулся. Ее происхождение в английском языке несущественно, во "Властелине Колец" же она образована от корней, входящих в название Brandywine River и в фамильное имя Oldbuck (см. статьи, относящиеся к этим словам). Это последнее содержит корень "buck" (в значении животного), соответствующий древнеанглийскому "bucc" – "самец оленя (косули, лани)" {Косуля и лань относятся к семейству оленей.} , либо "bucca" – "козёл". Buckland по замыслу содержит то же самое название животного (по-немецки "Bock"), хотя происхождение слова Buckland (английское географическое название) часто связывают с "book-land" {"Bookland" (буквально "книжная земля") – "общинная земля, дарованная какому-либо лицу".} – земля, изначально выделенная во владение в соответствии с письменным договором.
